Jay Chesterman and Bill Feiges ventured to Steelville, Missouri for the 4th annual Berryman Trail Epic mtb race on October 22nd. The 55 mile race is dominated by single track with some fire roads over a figure 8-shaped course. 220 racers made the start.
Despite making a wrong turn at about the 30-mile mark plus hitting a tree and cracking his helmet, Jay would finish 10th in the 30-39 age group and 18th overall of 194 finishers. Jay may have cracked the top 10 overall had he not made the detour. His time was 4:55:10. Steve Tilford won the overall in 4:09:03 setting a new course record.
Tire failure slowed Bill down in the 50-59 age group. He fixed a couple flats but a 3rd flat from a cut tire would thereupon put a serious drag on his forward progress. Unable to boot it, Bill continued but soon the tire split wide open and he was stranded on the trailside without a spare 29'er skin. He was idle until a teenage rider came by whom generously provided a replacement. Bill remounted and finished 7th in his age group and 98th overall with a time of 6:05:10.
The final event in the Spoke-n-Sport CX series concluded with a night race on October 29th. In the 'A' group Ulises Salas and Casey Swenson finished 3rd and 4th, respectively.
Living History Farms in Urbandale was again the site of the popular Spooky Cross weekend October 29th-30th. After taking an early lead in Saturday's race, Jeff Kluck dueled Brian Jensen (Tradewind Energy) in the closing laps but the Kansan proved strongest in the 1,2,3's contest. Bob Greigg finished 3rd in the Master's 35+ go-around.
On Sunday, Jeff crashed early in the elite race and sank to the back of the 20 rider field. He fought back and chased all the way up to 4th place by the end of the 60 minute sufferfest. Bob finished 6th in his 35+ trial. -Posted 11/2/11
