Slated as a Cat 1/2 race, Cat 3 riders were allowed to join this group if they wanted to after the officials decided to reduce three fields to two fields. The 27 starters then set off for their 3-lap race.

In a move that would set the tone for this race, four breakways would make their bid on the first lap. The four, Clark Priebe (unattached), Mike Sencenbaugh (Sakari), Greg Shimonek (MCC) and Chris Spence (Kaos) would maintain their lead into lap two. Shimonek later flatted and the group decided to wait. They would later regret waiting as Shimonek would unfortunately flat a second time. This time the other three would push on fearing that perhaps a chase had organized by then.

Through Climbing Hill and headed into their final lap, the estimated lead of the trio was 2 minutes. Although working together, the leaders would eventually be reeled in by a few motivated chasers that seperated from the group on the rollers of D-38.

At about halfway across the Moville Blacktop to Climbing Hill for the final time, Lee Bumgarner and Jordan Ross (Kaos), Lucas Marshall (MCC) and Jon Nelson (unattached) would bridge up to form the final selection to decide the win.

The leaders appeared to settle in together through town preparing for their final assault of the hill. But not content to wait for the climb, Bumgarner suddenly threw all his cards into a bid to break his competitors by attacking just after crossing the small bridge west of town. Marshall desperately tried to reach his wheel with the others now splitting apart in a state of disarray behind.

Marshall would never close the gap by the time Bumgarner began to climb. But with their individual surges complete, both racers now had earned very comfortable gaps over their shattered pursuers. Lee came across the line 10 seconds ahead of Lucas. Now the first and second place finishers on the podium would be the same as the 2012 race. Ross would finish 3rd, Nelson 4th with Spence and Sencenbaugh hanging on for 5th and 6th, respectively.

This was Bumgarner's second win already in three races this year. He was second in his other race.
