2013: The Year in Review

Written by: Admin

Mr. Admin is sorry for the lateness in posting last year's review but it's been a cold winter and he's been hibernating. Or something. And oh yeah, the site had been broken for a few months. He eventually figured out how to unbreak it but the appearance is kind of plain for the time being. Anyway...

2013 was a good year for the Powerade/IF racing team. We raced 126 times with 42 of them ending with our riders standing atop 3-step podiums. We earned 17 victories, 10 second places and 15 third places included in our 89 Top-10's, overall.

The Top-3 most frequent racers were: Jon Nelson (23), Kevin Vanderlinden (17) and Bill Feiges (16).

Our winners were: Kevin Vanderlinden (7), Jon Nelson (5). Ben Cork, Bill Feiges, Jeff Kluck, Brent Linn, Cody McCullough (1 each).

We represented well at popular national events such as Chequamegon 40, Jingle Cross, Mt. Borah Epic and State, National and World Championships. We competed in road, mountain bike and cyclocross races in most of the bordering states. One of us went all the way to France; Jay Chesterman competed in the ultra-marathon mountain bike race called the M-B Race.

Highlights:
In December, Jon Nelson won the 45+ Iowa State Championship in Cyclocross. Brent Linn was 3rd place in the 55+ championship.

In July, Jay Chesterman traveled to France for the M-B ultra-marathon race. He finished 10th in his age group and 26th overall. This race is so epic and so difficult there were only 58 finishers out of 500 starters.

In January, Jeff Kluck competed in the Cyclcross National Championships where he finished 9th in the 30-34 age group. He finished 5th place in the Masters' Cyclocross World Championships, also in the 30-34 age group.

Other highlights:
We hosted the popular Twin Bing Classic road race in April; the A and B category format attracted 95 racers. The 6th annual race is scheduled for April 13th, 2014.

We USAC-permitted the Frosty Cross cyclocross race in December and the iGranFondo in July.

Some Club SC Velo members helped complete the excellent single track mountain bike trail at Bacon Creek Park in Sioux City.

In late summer, we started a Thursday evening South Dakota ride with the intention of developing juniors and new racers.

Several of us took part in the very popular Tuesday evening rides in LeMars, sponsored by the Bike Central shop, from Spring into Fall.

Thank you to our 2013 Sponsors: Powerade, Independent Fabrication, Rudy Project, Mt. Borah, Albrecht Cycle, North Iowa Oral Surgery, Palmer Candy and Crary Huff Attorneys at Law.

We look forward to competing in 2014. We'll see you at the races!
