2008 Iowa Cup

Written by: Administrator

The Iowa Cup points competition has been reworked for 2008 into four weekends and eight races. Among the teammates I have talked to, we think this is a great schedule and having these races concentrated on four weekends but spread out during the season should ensure very good attendance and intense competition at these events.

Off the Back with Ken Peterson

The 2nd in our Off the Back series of interviews:

So, where were you born?
Portland, Oregon.

What inspired you to start racing and what was your first race?
After commuting by bike to a job while living in rural Minnesota I was hooked on a regular cycling schedule and when we moved to Iowa in 2004, I wanted to get my family more involved in the community of cycling. My first race was at the 2004 Nebraska Cyclo-Cross in Lincoln. Cat 5 beginner, 4th place.

Off the Back is a new feature starting today. The purpose is to find out a little bit more about our teammates. The plan is to post at least one Q&A per week until we work through the team. Thanks for playing.

Look, Mom! We're On YouTube!

I've finally gotten around to finishing this little media project that I started at the end of the 2006 season. The idea was to make a video for our team as a promotional tool. There wasn't an abundance of photos to work with at the time and it was quite difficult to put together as a result. Although I wanted to include as many of the team members as possible, I ultimately decided to use the best quality images that were available.

Walter Recounts National Championships

Race 1

The first race for me was on Thursday. This was the Men's 40+ B race and we arrived plenty early to check out the course. Kansas City had a pretty big ice storm a few days earlier but the course was in fairly good shape (I heard that they had actually taken out a couple of 4-wheelers to break up the ice on the course). There were two races before mine so the conditions were muddy and icy by that time.

Starting positions were based on registration and my spot was in the fourth row. I even got lucky enough to be placed on the outside edge of the grid. When the gun went off, I immediately let the guy next to me go up the road as I positioned myself behind him. This allowed me to pass quite a few guys. I even held back a bit on the starting pavement so I wouldn't expend too much and go anaerobic right off. Plus, this was just to be a tune-up race to get a feel for the course.

Part B: The cameraman is Jim Gentes of Soquel, CA. He has some pretty good skills and passed a lot of riders to finish 19th

Walter at Kansas City CX

Marc Walter finished 35th among 79 starters today in the Men's B 40+ category at the Kansas City Cyclocross Race. This 45 minute race, which was described as the muddiest of the day, was a Non-National Championship event.

I'm not aware of his plans at this writing but Marc could race the Masters 45-49 race at 3:00 on Friday and/or the Masters 40-45 race at 2:00 on Saturday which are the National Championship events he is eligible for based on his age.

The forecast for Friday is partly cloudy and 34 degrees. Saturday looks like non-accumulating snow in the morning under cloudy skies all day with a high of 27 degrees. -Posted 12/13/07

It's Still Fall in Georgia (Y'all)

Written by: Cody McCullough

On December 1st, 2007, Bill Feiges, Jay Chesterman and Cody McCullough traveled South to test the Team's new clothing on the rolling terrain of northern Georgia. Mark Beatie, a friend of Bill and former Iowa City bike racer, showed us to a popular local ride leaving from a Budweiser Brewery. Upon arrival, the parking lot was already full of cars with bike racks and groups of riders leaving. There were so many folks stirring about getting ready for the ride that one had the sense we should be pinning on numbers.

A local cycling group (BBC) had spray painted directional arrows for 45, 65 and 105 mile rides that appeared on the pavement as we immediately departed the brewery. We would later come to find these directional markers were a necessity as the roads were a maze that had us often wondering which direction we were traveling. We opted for the 105 mile route and quickly found ourselves in the countryside pedaling through unbelievably smooth asphalt roads that started with gentle undulations and few encounters with cars. The climbs would eventually become slightly steeper and longer, but nothing that challenged our goal of accumulating some winter base miles.

3 SCV's at SOBE No Fear CX Weekend

Written by: Administrator

Jay Chesterman, Ken Peterson and Marc Walter competed over the weekend at Pioneers Park in Lincoln in the two final events of the Nebraska CX Series.

Marc Walter finished 4th on Saturday in SOBE No Fear CX #1 to secure 2nd place overall among the Masters in the four-race series. He remounted that day and finished 12th in the 1,2,3 race that was dominated by Bill Stolte of HRRC/Trek. Marc did not race Sunday.

Jay Chesterman finished 8th Saturday and improved to 6th on Sunday among the Cat 3's. The strongest 3 of the weekend was Kelly Irwin of Sioux City (Northern Rocker Orthopaedic) who was 2nd on Saturday and then topped that by winning Sunday.
